The training we provide to our customers has many similarities to our intensive and certified training we provide to our own technicians. Our training courses address both operator and maintainer requirements and incorporate competence assessments.

    COURSES OFFERED


    Fairbanks Morse Defense offers a variety of courses in both operator training and maintenance training.

    • Operator training focuses on training the personnel using the equipment.
    • Maintainer training empowers the technicians maintaining the equipment with the expertise and tools necessary to ensure that the equipment continues to power your vessel.

    We utilize a mixture of training techniques in our courses.

    • Our certified instructors use real OEM equipment and model the course material off of real, mission critical scenarios.
    • We create and apply the latest in technology innovation and that continues into the classroom.
    • By applying our FM OnBoard augmented reality software and AR headsets, we can create multimedia, self-guided technical instructions, access training remotely, or perform guided maintenance.

    FM Nuclear Courses

    • NRC: Emergency Diesel Training

    • For NRC employees only. This course describes and enumerates the legal basis and requirements for emergency diesel generators at commercial nuclear power stations under the jurisdiction of the NRC.

    FM 38D & 38TD Engine Courses

    • FM 38D & 38TD 8-1/8 Familiarization

    • Price: $3,000.00

      This course is one week in length. It consists of the first week of the two-week overhaul course. Approximately 50% of the student's time will be spent in a classroom covering the technical manual and maintenance procedures. The rest of the time will be spent performing inspections and minor disassembly of the 6 cylinder training engine and its components.

      This course is available through the first week of the OP Overhaul class or by special request.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      FM 38D and 38TD 8-1/8 Engine Overhaul

      Two week course which covers the operation and repair of the engine in our Beloit, WI location. This course starts on Monday morning at 8 AM. It covers the theory of operation of a diesel engine, two and four stroke cycle. Also the history of the engine, operation and its systems, how the engine is manufactured, the component parts and numerous assembly and disassembly techniques. We remove the upper crankshaft, various upper and lower pistons, camshaft, and injection equipment, perform timing adjustments, blower and vertical drive inspections.  About 75% of the time is hands-on training.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      FM Snorkel Blower Overhaul

      This class is a one week class held in our Chesapeake, VA location.  The class starts on Monday at 8 a.m.  The class consists of about 80% hands on and 20% classroom work.  The class will consist of overhauling the blower which includes the disassembly, inspections, and reassembly of the snorkel blower as well as “as found” and “post” checks.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      FM Roots Blower Overhaul

      This class is a one-week class held in our Beloit, WI campus.  The class starts on Monday at 8 a.m.  The class consists of about 80% hands on and 20% classroom work.  The class will consist of overhauling the blower which includes the disassembly, inspections, and reassembly of the roots blower as well as “as found” and “post” checks.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      OP Block Assessment 

      Price: $3,000

      This is a one-week class regarding the OP block assessment to determine if the block is acceptable within specifications or in need of repairs that involve mechanical and welding processes. The class will consist of 80% hands-on and 20% classroom training to include but not limited to the following items:

      1. Precision instrumentation use.

      2. Use the bearing cap mandrel.

      3. Use of the checking and go-no-go mandrels.

      4. Demonstration of thrust pad checks. 

      5. Measurment of the lower crank line with the bore gauge tool with crankshaft in place. 

      6. Demonstration of pad checks. 

      7. Analyzing data and providing recommendations for block repairs.

    FM 251F Engine Courses

    • FM 251 Familiarization

    • Price: $3,000.00

      This course is one week in length. It consists of the first week of the two-week overhaul course. Approximately 50% of the student's time will be spent in a classroom covering the technical manual and maintenance procedures. The rest of the time will be spent performing inspections and minor disassembly of the 12 cylinder training engine and its components.

      This course is available through the first week of the FM 251 Overhaul class or by special request.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      FM 251 Engine Overhaul

      This is a two-week course held in our Beloit, WI location. 20% of the time will be spent in the classroom going over individual components. And 80% of the time will be in the lab performing removal and installation of a power assembly, cylinder head, fuel pump support, fuel pump, injection nozzle, camshafts, drive gear, camshaft thrust and main bearing. The students will remove, disassemble, reassemble, and install a lube oil and jacket water pump, perform an engine tune-up; which includes air and exhaust valve adjustments, fuel pump timing, governor linkage, and fuel control rack adjustments. The classes begin at 8 AM on Monday and ends before noon on the final Friday.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

    • FM Basic Electrical Controls

      The Basic Electrical Controls course will be one week in length held in our Chesapeake, VA location. The course will cover basic electrical components, series and parallel circuits, using bread boards and basic PLC controls.  The class will consist of approximately 40% classroom training and 60% hands on training.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      Advanced Controls

      The Advanced Electrical Controls course will be one week in length held in our Chesapeake, VA location.  The course will cover electrical components, sensor adjustments/calibration and schematic troubleshooting using bread boards and PLC controls. The class will consist of approximately 40% classroom training and 60% hands on training.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      Common Rail & SaCoSone Controls

      The Common Rail & SaCoSone Controls course will be one week in length, held in either one of our world-class training centers. Please see locations next to each date above. The course will cover common rail components used in Fairbanks Morse engines, SaCoSone control system components, and operation used in Fairbanks Morse engines.  The class will consist of approximately 40% classroom training and 60% hands on training.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      LCS Controls

      LCS Controls Phase 1 & 2. Covers controls theory and operations. This one week class covers the Engine Control Unit, STC theory, component identification, PLC, and operations.  This training also provides normal calibration procedures utilizing LEEC Lite software to ensure normal operations of the engine.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      LPD Controls

      LPD Controls Phase 1 & 2. Covers controls theory and operations. This one week class covers the Engine Control Unit, STC theory, component identifications, and operations.  This training also provides normal calibration procedures utilizing the LEEC Lite software to ensure normal operations of the engine.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

    • FM PA6B Familiarization and Maintenance

      This class will be the first week of the Overhaul classes or by special request.

      This course is one week in length. It consists of the first week of the two-week overhaul course. Approximately 70% of the student's time is spent performing hands-on training with various engine components. The engine lab is equipped with connecting rods, cylinder heads, pistons, injection nozzle, fuel pump, main and con rod bearings, housed in an 8-cylinder training engine. The other 30% of the student's time is spent in the classroom covering the technical manual, viewing maintenance videos, and/or discussing components, parts and sub-assemblies.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      FM PA6B Overhaul

      This is a two-week course held in our Chesapeake, VA location. 20% of the time will be spent in the classroom going over individual components and 80% of the time will be in the lab performing removal and installation of various engine components, including a power assembly, cylinder head, fuel pump, injection nozzle, camshafts, drive gear, camshaft thrust and main bearing, Moatti filter, spinner, perform an engine tune-up; including air and exhaust valve adjustments, fuel pump timing and walk-thru of fuel control rack adjustments. The classes begin at 8 AM on Monday and ends before noon on the final Friday.

      FM PC2 Series Engine Familiarization

      This class will be the first week of the Overhaul classes or by special request.

      This course is one week in length. Approximately 60% of the student's time is spent performing hands-on training with various engine components. It covers design, operation, and basic maintenance and inspection of the PC2 series engines. The engine lab is equipped with connecting rods, cylinder heads, pistons, injection nozzles, fuel pumps, main and con rod bearings. The other 40% of the student's time is spent in the classroom covering the technical manual, viewing maintenance videos, and/or discussing components parts and sub-assemblies.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      FM PC2 Series Engine Overhaul

      This is a two-week course held in our Chesapeake, VA location for government customers and in Beloit, WI for commercial customers. Please see locations next to each date above. 30% of the time will be spent in the classroom going over individual components and 70% of the time will be in the lab performing removal and installation of a cylinder head, piston and con-rod, liner, injection nozzle, camshaft timing, main bearing replacement, web deflections and perform an engine tune-up; including air and exhaust valve adjustments, fuel pump timing, and walk-thru of fuel control rack adjustments. The classes begin at 8 AM on Monday and ends before noon on the final Friday.

      Customers who attend factory training will be required to take an exam at the end of the course to receive your training completion certificate. You must obtain a 70% or better to get your certificate.

       

      FM PC4.2 Series Engine Familiarization

      This course is one week in length that is held at our Chesapeake, VA location. Approximately 40% of the student's time will be spent in a classroom covering the technical manual and maintenance procedures, component ID and control system troubleshooting. The remaining time will be spent performing hands-on training with various engine components. The engine lab contains components from one cylinder including piston, cylinder liner, head, injection pump, and nozzle. Disassembly of these parts including inspections and use of special tools are covered.
