An Industry-Wide Call for Reliability

Monday, 13 Aug 2018

1.2 billion.

This is the number of people in the world who completely lack access to power. Another billion only have access to power intermittently. This deficit is continually growing, with an expected 41 percent increase in energy demand through 2040.

9 of 12.

This is the number of the most expensive storms in U.S. history that have occurred within the past three years. These superstorms paired with an aging grid cause power reliability issues across the United States.

These statistics are two examples of many that display the growingReliable Power demand for reliable power across the globe. However, the physical product that represents reliable power varies from user to user. We pride ourselves on being an innovative company, one which rises to meet the quickly changing energy demands of our world. Therefore, we wanted to create a platform in which we could meet each customer’s definition of reliable power. The call for reliable power is what drove the launch of the new Fairbanks Morse PoweReliability-as-a-Service™ platform. In addition, the unique design of the Trident OP® allows for customization to a variety of environments and is well-suited for continuous, CHP, microgrid, and peaking power for industrial applications. The Trident OP® is easily adapted to meet each environment’s specific needs and priorities.

Backed by fuel efficiency and reliability guarantees that are monitored in the cloud-based platform, PoweReliability-as-a-Service™ reduces risk and operating expenses for end users who want to generate their own power - whether remote, off grid, or grid-tied. In a 10-megawatt power plant configuration, Fairbanks Morse projects $35 million in savings to be achieved in fuel consumption and increased reliability. This fuel efficient, cloud-based platform is powered by the new Trident OP® engine and distributed engine resources.

Trident OP EngineEngineered to endure, the Trident OP® answers the need for higher efficiency power generation in a wide range of applications and represent a class-leading, next-generation engine.

Affordable reliability is of critical importance for base load power generation. The Trident OP® bypasses minor overhauls that other high or medium speed engines require around 20,000 hours and can run for 40,000 hours until the first major servicing. Additionally, the engine has embedded smart sensors and controls that communicate via the energy cloud to enable real-time monitoring from anywhere in the world.

OP technology is set to revolutionize commercial power generation applications, delivering increased reliability stemming from fewer moving parts, higher performance from its increased efficiency and easier serviceability due to the engine’s advanced design. This unique and flexible design will allow for full customization to multiple situations or environments.

“On a recent international trip, I was able to see firsthand what life looks like when you don’t have reliable power. And with a lot of the natural disasters that we’re experiencing, it just really hits home how important power is and the impact it can have on a community. It feels good to wake up every day and know that our objective is to bring power and bring light to as much of the world as possible,” said Fairbanks Morse product marketing director.

All of the benefits that come with reliable power - like clean water, safety, small business opportunities, and more - are what inspire us to bring power to all corners of the globe. With the launch of the Trident OP® and our PoweReliability-as-a-Service™ platform, we are determined to continue powering the world forward by delivering power where it is needed most.
