Why Buy American-Made Products?

Tuesday, 28 Aug 2018

As more manufacturing jobs are moved overseas, American companies and workers face larger competition for sales and jobs. To illustrate the importance of buying American-made products, we have outlined four points and examples from Fairbanks Morse. Since the company’s founding in the 1870s, Fairbanks Morse has produced a wide variety of products in the United States, including the Eclipse Windmill, the Train Master locomotive, and the first commercially successful gasoline engine in 1893.

Fostering Job Creation

Purchasing products made in America supports the creation of U.S. jobs. It helps foster growth in our industry and provides a future of job security in the country. In May, Fairbanks Morse was awarded a $17.3 million multi-year services contract by Military Sealift Command (MSC), which services U.S. military ships at sea. This contract will create jobs for American workers at Fairbanks Morse’s domestic service centers.

“We are committed to providing the most exceptional service in the industry and appreciate that MSC has entrusted our certified technicians to extend the life cycle of the most rigorously used engines in the world,” said Eduardo Echagarruga, director of services and solutions at Fairbanks Morse. “This contract that covers all U.S.-based surface ships with Fairbanks Morse engines will directly benefit American workers as it will create jobs at our domestic service centers.” Fairbanks Morse currently employs over 500 people, with over 300 of those at our Beloit manufacturing facility. Those jobs are made possible by organizations such as the U.S Navy that buy engines from us and support American manufacturing.

Supporting the American Economy

Tammy Baldwin Ship BuildingMoney spent in the U.S. stays here to support the growth of domestic businesses and entities. With that revenue, these businesses generate goods and services to support the domestic customers. Buying American-made product helps our country prosper independently without reliance on international business. The MSC contract demonstrates our valued partnership with the U.S. Navy and is a great example of industrial support of our service members and their support of our business in return. In February 2018, Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin visited Fairbanks Morse and announced her plans to introduce the Made in America Shipbuilding Act of 2018. This bill requires any ship that is purchased using taxpayer funding to be built in the USA. The bill was introduced into Congress in April 2018 and is under review.

Keeping Workers Safe

Keeping Workers Safe

When manufacturing is done overseas, we are unable to confirm the quality of working conditions. In the United States, government regulations protect workers from unfair working conditions or labor practices. When you purchase American-made products, you are ensuring the safety of those workers so they can complete their best work.

At Fairbanks Morse, our core values are safety, excellence, and respect. These values paired with Fairbanks Morse parent company EnPro’s dual bottom line reinforce the importance of caring for our employees. The dual bottom line philosophy puts the value of financial success on equal footing with the personal success of our employees. We believe our power comes from our people.

Quality Products

FM _ COLT-PIELSTICK PA6-minMany people choose to buy American-made products as a result of the higher quality level that comes from domestic manufacturing. The unmatched quality of products made in the United States compensates for the often higher costs.

Quality is very important to Fairbanks Morse. Each engine, power system, or spare part undergoes a unique set of quality checkpoints designed specifically for that product. All products then proceed through a final inspection before being shipped out. We are committed to producing high-quality engines and power systems to bring power to where it is needed most.
